Ginoogaming First Nation is looking to fill 2 Jordan’s Principle Case worker positions

 

Summary:

Jordan’s principle is a child-first principle that applies equally to all First Nations children, whether resident on or off reserve.  It is not limited to First Nations children with disabilities, or those with discrete short-term issues creating critical needs for health and social supports or affecting their activities of daily living.

Jordan’s Principle addresses the needs of First Nations children by ensuring there are no gaps in government services to them. It can address, for example, but is not limited to, gaps in such services as mental health, special education, dental, physical therapy, speech therapy, medical equipment and physiotherapy

 

Position Overview:

The Jordan’s Principle Case Worker is responsible for assisting the Jordan Principle Coordinator and clients in day-to-day operations assisting with the planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating activities related to the Jordan’s Principle Child First Initiative.  The caseworker will ensure an effective and accurate filing system, limited office administration which includes scheduling appointments for the coordinator and for community members as required

General duties include:

Strategic and Operational Planning

·         Work collaboratively with children and their families by providing administrative support to access services

·         Maintain a high level of confidentiality

·         Meet the client, family, children on their terms by being flexible and non-judgmental

·         Navigate client inquiries; research client supports and program specific resources

·         Capture reporting data/statistics as required

·         Maintain files and documentation required for files/ applications

·         Provide administrative support by answering telephones, questions about Jordan’s Principle and provide referrals and scheduling

·         Assist with the organizing of workshops/meeting logistics

·         Update file case notes and complete file audits

·         Document, track client/ family interactions.

·         Work cooperatively as a part of a team.

·         Be knowledgeable with Department of Indigenous Services Canada documentation related to the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal and Jordan’s Principle

·         Work proactively to identify children with unmet needs to facilitate administrative paperwork to help aid early intervention and timely access to services and resources.

·         Attend professional development opportunities as requested

Qualifications:

Program and Service Delivery Management

·         Ensure an appropriate model of service delivery to support children with complex/special needs and their families, including respite care, crisis intervention, behavior management, and life skills training, both on a one-to-one basis and in group settings.

·         Ensure children receive culturally appropriate and quality services and support families where assistance may be required to identify service providers, social services, educators and supports needed that would enhance their well-being

·         Assess the client’s health status to enable joint planning, implementation and evaluation of appropriate interventions.

·         Provide information and navigation for families.

·         Recognizing the deficits of provincial services and programs to ensure client needs are met.

·         Foster relationships and partnerships with community-based programs and services, service providers, federal and provincial.

·         Establish, maintain and oversee data collection and data entry in electronic and paper filing systems ensuring confidentiality and accuracy of client files.

·         Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate recreational, social and/or educational activities for children and their families.

·         Provide formal presentations and education programs as well as informal teaching to communities, families, groups, and individuals.

·         Emphasize health promotion, illness and injury prevention and provide appropriate anticipatory guidance.

·         Follow-up with clients/families and key contacts to ensure the child is receiving and maintaining the services required

·         Support data collection, report writing as required and maintain work files that are accurate and up to date

Performs other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by Chief and Council.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         A comprehensive and progressive understanding of the First Nation trends, issues, research, challenges and opportunities, with respect to health care, social services, prevention and wellness

·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including verbal and written

·         A demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others

·         Proactive approach to problem solving and strong decision making

·         Strong advocacy skills

·         Ability to work under high stress including adapting to shifting demands

·         Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills

·         Trauma based knowledge and practices an asset

·         Ability to de-escalate situations, if required

·         Excellent computer skills including experience in word processing and spreadsheet software

·         Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail

 

Experience and Education Requirements:

·         Grade 12 or equivalent

·         Degree in Social Services or Mental Health

·         Experience coordinating and/or managing social programs and services

·         Experience working in First Nation communities

·         Valid Driver’s License

·         CPR and First Aid Certificate

·         Sensory and Mental Attention: Active environment responding to many requests at one time, participating in meetings and various information sessions.

·         Ability to successfully and periodically undergo an appropriate criminal records review and police record check is required
